Top Secret Episode was one of the first truly adult-oriented games to appear in America on the NES, and that really gives it a tone that’s quite unlike anything else on the console. Aside from the infamous hotel sex scenes, the plot deals with espionage, murder, weapons of mass destruction, and just about everything else terrible that you can imagine. And best of all, you, as Duke Togo, go around taking care of business by turning the bad guys into swiss cheese with pistols and his signature sniper rifle. Golgo 13 is also pretty notable for the different game-types it employs. Most of the game is played from the typical side-scrolling platformer mode, but there are first-person shooting galleries, 3D mazes, shoot ’em up stages, and a few cool sniper shot moments. The mazes are a bit naff, but the rest of it is all really good if you don’t mind the stiff challenge the game puts up.

And that animated picture of Duke pulling up the rifle, complete with glinting eye piece, is one of the badass animations I’ve seen in an 8-bit game.

For anyone that sees the similarities between them, Shoichi Yoshikawa (Angela, as he so prefers) directed this title a couple of years before he tackled WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth (an equally fantastic, much more refined take on the gameplay that was originally established here). He didn’t, however, have anything to do with the development of The Mafat Conspiracy.

  2. I love how if any of these chapters happened in real life not only would it make news, but it would be in history books.
"Remember that time in Greece where this private helicopter annihilated a terrorist armada?"

  3. this game was my childhood never beat it never knew really what was going on but the random attacks music and the ladies 😄 that one scene in hotel and then shuts blinds loved this game

  4. The summary of this game is

Not good play-ability not good music and rough enemies, well in general the stylish of this game is rough

  5. I remember this game. It drove me insane as a kid. Now that we have internet and walkthroughs etc I should dl an emulator n finish this ugh

  6. Nintendo didnt play around. If you were out of lives, you had to start from the beginning again. No youtube walkthroughs either. I saw many a remote get tossed at the tv screen.

  7. My father hated video games, but this is the only game he both bought and watched me play as a kid. Great times.

  8. I remember someone tricked 11 year-old me into swaping my Super Mario Bros 3 cart for other three games including this one, I felt robbed :D, but with time Golgo 13 grew in me, for real, my friends mocked me because they thought was a very bad game.

  9. In Magic Jewelry levels 3&11 are in this colour and RCM/Hwang Shinwei (the creators of Magic Jewelry) added some animation to the flame and changed the colour of the crown

  10. This game is fun, unless you lost the manual…..then you will never get out of those mazes….game sucked really

  11. There is no way, there is no FUCKING way you could do that last boss fight so slopply, and finish it with that much health. How, how did you do it?! I can't do this, man!! I don't wanna game over now.. damn

  12. Such a classic! Thanks for uploading this, I played it back in the day but it was only a rental so I never really got much of a chance to finish it (plus I was like 11.)

  13. The music in this game is KILLER!!! This game gets no mentions today as a pioneer in the spy/action shooter genre. There was NOTHING like this when it came out. I loved it when I was a kid, but like a lot of games, it was HARD!! I rented this game a dozen times before finally completing it. Eventually bought an old copy in the late 90’s.

  14. This is one game that could have used a playthrough guide when it first came out. I don't even think I even got out of scene 1 when I used to play this game.

  15. Played this poorly when I was 7 up at some friends in New York. Parents had some religious differences, and haven't heard from them since. Only have one kill to my record in encounters.
